Hello 2013!

Well look at that, we're still here!  Crazy Mayans.

Holiday Pics
Here we are in the new year with lots of fun great holiday memories and one very awful airplane flight I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy behind us.  Would I do it again?  Hmmm, I'M THINKING!  Parts of it, definitely.  Other parts I will live and learn for the next time.  So how are those aaadorable boys (yes, I doth proclaim them "adorable" it's my I-carried-them-in-my-body-and-made-them-I-would-think-they-were-adorable-if-they-had-1-eye-in-the-middle-of-their-forehead breeder right.  It's kinda like "beer goggles")?

Kaz

Where does he get this stuff?

Every parent has that moment when they marvel and chuckle at the things there little person says.  Some of it is an "awe isn't that cute" moment while other times it's "ummm, go ask your father" kinda moment.  Here are a couple of our recent moments sans penis talk.  Yup, penis talk.  Why make us ALL uncomfortable?  You're welcome.
  • Us: "Kaz can you (fill in the blank) for me?" Kaz: "Of course!"  You've never heard someone so excited or agreeable about throwing away a dirty diaper.  It's refreshing.  This little habit is courtesy of his teachers at school.  Yes they are down right little sponges.  Sometimes I wish he didn't soak so much up.  For instance...
  • "Oh Jesus Christ!"  Courtesy of his FATHER (totally putting him on blast! Side note: one day my children are gonna read this and laugh at me for saying "on blast" much like I did when my parents said "far out".)  I can't wait till he says this at his religious preschool.  That's gonna be a fun convo...for his Dad who's number I will pass to the teacher.
  • "That shirt is for a girl!" said as I asked him to try on a lovely hot pink furry vest I was trying to size for his cousins Christmas gift.  Huh?  We NEVER talk about how things are made for boys or girls.  Pink is a color and tea sets are made to drink tea (which btw if anyone sees a cute gender neutral one, let me know.  I used to love having tea with my Aunt when I was a kid and I'd like to do the same with my boys.)  Who plagued my boys mind with gender association?  The only time I've had to make a distinction is when Kaz told me he wanted a baby in his tummy.  I KISS'd (keep it simple silly) it and quickly moved on (too soon, TOO SOON!)  The culprit is unknown, for now we will blame it on that lovely yet terrible place called school and the other tainted minds of children.  Awful, yes I am.
    "I'm Puss n' Boots!"  He's
    gonna kill me for posting
    this one day.
  • We've got our very own pint sized Rich Little:  Kaz is rather shy but he copes by becoming a character (favorites are, Jeff, Pirate, Dinosaur/Dragon/Lizard, and Lion) or he simply "falls asleep" (snores included.)  You can imagine the looks we get.  Lately he's been trying on voices for size.  His repertoire really only includes 2. A British accent he acquired from Zoodles, "Would you like to paint a picture?"  And he likes to talk like Mrs. Kwan from The Cat in the Hat.  Kaz is definitely his mothers child.  What, I didn't walk around the neighborhood dressed as a elephant hunter complete with a pith helmet?  Nope, not me.
"Look at the brain on Brad"

Ah yes he's a hoot and a holler but he's not just a goofy face.  He's got a big flourishing brain in that towheaded melon.

Disclaimer: Every kid develops differently.  This is not bragging this is just what he's up to developmentally.  Keep in mind he still can't hold a pencil effectively nor can he cut (or walk for that matter) a strait line so we are gonna celebrate what he can do.
  • Kaz has started to read.  He's been able to read a few words here and there and we thought, "Hey why not let him try this reading thing.  Why keep a good brain down?" So we got him a set of sight word books and he LOVES it.  Look, it's not like he's reading Voltaire.  In fact I'm sure he's just memorizing the story but hey, it's a start.
November began with Book 1: "Mat hid. Sam saw Mat. Sam ran to Mat."
Today Book 9: "Peg sat in the sun. Ted got a snack. They fed the ducks."
  • Umm when was someone gonna tell me that he can count to 100.  I had NO idea!  Technically he's not counting (totally different skill) but he can read numbers 1 - 100.  I was shocked when we were looking at a chart of numbers and he read all of them except numbers 90 and 100.  What else can this little mind do that he's not telling me?
Argh!

Kaz's name means, "keeper of the peace" but these days, in true eldest sibling fashion he has become Kaz the enforcer.  He is very "helpful" in trying (aka pushing) to stop his brother from doing something he shouldn't be doing.  Like pouring his milk all over the floor while laughing and egging you on to stop him.  This usually ends in Zane tripping and falling while trying to make a wobbly toddler escape resulting in rug burns on his face (don't ask.)  Which BTW come to find Kaz is not the best in a crisis.  If there is blood and crying and you need help, you're on your own.
  • Me: "Kaz can you hand me a wash cloth (as blood is pouring out of his brothers nose in a freak I-tripped-while-carrying-a-chair-to-do-chair-races-and-took-a-header-into-said-chair accident)?
  • Kaz: "I'm scared!"
  • Me: "Scared of what, I need your help please."
  • Kaz: "I'm scared of the washcloth."
Yeah like I said, you are on your own.

Kaz is trying to drop his afternoon nap and all I can say is...

Kaz had yet another speech eval not because we think he needs speech therapy but because he needs a little OT for that whole hypotonia thing.  Doesn't make sense right?  Well the school district offers early intervention services to preschool age children but there's a catch.  Your child has to qualify for speech therapy in order to get OT.  I get it, language and speech skills can directly be connected to a learning disability and since school is all about learning it's very important.  You know what else is important, writing.  If you can't hold and write with a pencil, I think that might be a problem.  We could do this privately but there are some benefits if we do it through the district.  So this was a hope and a prayer Hail Mary play...yeah, it ain't gonna happen - no surprise!  The eval lasted almost 2 hours because the boys vocabulary is quite hefty.

Example:  When shown a picture of things to drink (milk, water, juice, and so on) Kaz was asked, "What are these things?"  Kaz replied, "Liquids."  When shown a picture of a refrigerator he replied, "Container."

The speech pathologist was sad when she gave me the news that he would not qualify because she said although she was not an OT she could see why he needed it (Kaz fumbled through some basic exercises and tripped over his own feet walking out of the room.) Ah, but there is a glimmer of hope!  She said that sometimes they do make exceptions!  Sigh, we will be meeting with an OT for that eval on Friday February 15.  To be continued.

On a lighter note: no matter what happens, in the end toots are funny in Kaz's world (where do they learn this stuff).  Yup, he's a REAL boy - Lord help me.

Zane

How's the BAAAA-by?

He is his Daddy - P11 v2.0. aka Punkmeister (Daddy is the original Punky - family nickname for good reason).  To quote his father, "Ugh, not only does he look like me..."  Yeah, you've heard of parents saying things like, "I hope you have a child just like you."  Well according to my mom I was a wonderful baby so what gives!?  I jest, he's great and he's supposed to test us.  If you have kids and don't think that's part of the package then you are in for a RUDE awakening but I have to say he is definitely earning his new nickname.

Oh come on he's just a baby!  Yes, with skills.  Some are very sophisticated like when he quietly pushed all the dinette chairs together to block his Daddy in the kitchen and then laughed at his daddy's imprisonment while he joyfully smashed a martini glass on the floor with intention and flair.  Others are not so sophisticated and teeter on WTFrench; like grabbing and eating a glass Christmas ornament off the tree.  I know what you're thinking, "Hey these are rookie mistakes - parent much?"  All I can say in our defense is, Kaz duped us!  By the time Kaz was mobile he was old enough to reason with.  You can't reason with a 15 month old!  It's like being a new parent alllll over again.

Firsts

We have been VERY lucky and have had a relatively healthy 1st year with Zane.  There have been a couple of runny noses but that's it.  Then on January 7th, a few hours before we were to leave for the airport to travel home after a lovely white Christmas in the Midwest....
Facebook: "A dose of cough syrup [for Kaz]: check, a dose of meds to lower the baby's 102.5 temp: check...alright, let's board a plane! The other passengers are gonna LOVE us :/"
Well THAT was fun! I'm not sure which was more fun; taking my 29 lb. writhing guttural screaming baby to the back of plane to rock him to sleep next to the toilet or buying drinks for the poor guys sitting in front of said baby.

Yes his 1st fever.  I think the fever was scared of Zane because once we landed, it never returned.  Thank God!

My head likes to lead
the running, can you
tell by my face?
Other firsts include independent spoon feeding; not my favorite but a necessary evil unless I plan on cutting up his food till he's grown.  Look how excited he was!  And parroting (copying words).  He's got the gift of gab even if we don't understand it but it sure does sound like he's saying something.  Oh and I LOVE when he points his finger while doing it.  Hmmm, wonder where he got that from?  Children are a living breathing mirror aren't they?

What's Up Doc?

15 Month Check-up - oh NOOOO he dropped 5%!  I think he's gonna be alright.  HA!
  • Height: 32" = 75%
  • Weight: 28 lbs 3 oz = 90%
  • Head: 48 cm = 75%
In November Zane was cutting molars, then I blinked and 2 teeth turned into 6 (total of 12 teeth now). No fuss, no mess. Then came the eye-teeth (insert horror music). Those wicked canines have turned my sweet baby into a writhing whining angry drooling little monster. Sometimes I don't even recognize him. It's as if the teeth are pushing a little demon out.  The power of Crest compels you, now get on out here so I can brush all this grumpiness away.

In the category of "Odd", how is it that we never noticed our precious beautiful baby's scary 2nd toes?  They kind of sit on top of the other toes and move independently.  That's not weird at all.  I guess we were blinded by blissful baby goggles.  They must of lost their shine with the canines.

Brotherhood

These boys are indeed becoming their own little people everyday.  But what I love the most about who they are becoming is they are finally "becoming" brothers.  They hug, kiss, and miss each other and it's so much fun watching their faces light up as they run towards each other after being apart.  I find myself tearing up all the time at the sweetness of it all.  It probably won't last but I hope the seeds are planted deep enough and the roots grow strong enough to always keep them grounded in each other.  Dang it, there I go again - sniff sniff.
